A Statement From Our General Manager
The Telecom section of the Henton website was inspired by experiences
I had with two similar phone companies in different places. I had an ISDN
line installed in one state for a very reasonable price - no installation
charge and less than $30 per month. When moving to another state
I found the exact same thing (both Bell companies) was hundreds to
install and 5 times the monthly charge. I also found my local toll,
intrastate, and interstate long distance rates were all higher.
This caused me to spend some time investigating all the charges on
my phone bill, why they were allegedly there, and what my friends,
relatives, and neighbors were paying on their bills. To my surprise
they were all different, and nobody could tell me the true rate
he or she was paying for any of the services. The reasons for this
are many, but can be largely summed up
with one word - politics. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, so those
who complain the most or who have the right "connections" pay less.
If you live in an area where the little guy is made to pay through
the nose for the services of others, and you are one of the little guys,
then you have to pay more to make up for the others who get the same
or better service for much less.
There are a few things you can do
to help alleviate the situation. First, learn what the real truth is.
You need to know what others are paying and the lowest amount you could possibly
pay on your current bill. Second, you can work on lowering the
minimum rates you can legally pay by joining with others to put
pressure on your legislators (federal and local) and public utility
commissions to give you equality. This site can help you with both.
We have information on the rates others are paying and tables of
rates for various phone services. You can check out all the rates from the
best companies that provide service on YOUR phone line. Simply use the
Custom Rate Computer to
see a complete list customized for your phone line and then use the
rate tables
to see which plan or combination of plans is the absolute cheapest for your
calling patterns. NOTE: The rate tables are lagging current rates and are being replaced
by the new custom bill computer that should be on-line before mid summer 2003.
Our rate tables calculate a per minute rate using
the actual bottom line total charges
from a number of sample bills consisting of various numbers of calls of random
length on bills totalling from 100 to 5000 minutes. We include ALL
charges that will appear on the bill and then divide by the number
of minutes, so our rates will be the ACTUAL per minute rate if your bill
totals one of these figures. The number of calls, the time, and length of each call
can have a significant impact on the bottom line. If you don't factor these
in OR if you include special limited time promotional rates that increase
shortly after you sign up, then you don't get a true picture of what
the service actually costs.
In the final analysis, the only absolute way
to know exactly how much YOUR bill will be is to find someone who will
plug your actual phone bill into a program designed to calculate the
cost of each service using the figures from your bill. As noted above this
will soon be available right here on this site after over a year of
working out the perfect program to take all factors into account. In the
meantime you can send us your bill and we will give you
a true, accurate picture of the absolute cheapest plan available for your
exact calling patterns. You can post the
figures from your bill, fax us a copy
of your bill (with the last 4 digits of all numbers marked out to protect your
privacy), E-mail us a copy of the same, or simply look over others' bills to see
if one is similar to yours. Any legitimate bill submitted will be calculated
just as soon as possible.
We also have a section for sending complaints to your elected and appointed
"representatives" to let them know you are armed with the power that knowledge
brings, are mad as heck, and won't take it much longer. This does work to
some extent, as the state of California now has instate rates around one-fifth
of the higher states for this very reason. We also have a links section which
will take you to official governmental sites and other informational sources
you may find helpful.
We hope you enjoy your stay here and will check back
with us often as rates and plans are always changing. We hope we play a small
part in helping everyone's bills drop now and in the future.
