Local Metering may be an option in your area that could save or cost you money
depending on your calling patterns. If you make only a few calls each
month, you will almost definitely save by using local metering if it is available.
Check to see if you will be charged by the minute, by the call, or if you will
have a minimum monthly charge for metering, and compare this to what you are now
paying for flat-rate local service. You need to figure this over many months
of bills as any one bill may not give a true picture of your calling pattern.
A small number of people, usually in dense urban areas like parts of New York City,
are "forced" to use metered service for all calls. Some people are paying exorbitant
per minute rates for the service. You can always use some alternative, if this is
your fate. If it is for a business, some other provider will always be available
to give you a flat rate local line. If you are a residential customer
and local politics dictates one and only one phone company for your service, then
you can still pay the basic rate (usually quite small) for a single residential
line and add a flat rate business line for your "home" business, whether you actually
have a home business or not. Use this line for all your local calling.
As the exact situation varies from area to area, we can't give specific recommendations
that will result in savings everywhere. The solution is to check every few months for
all the options available in your area, as these change constantly, and figure the
best for you. Don't be afraid to shop around for phone services, and don't assume
that it won't be worth the time. You will almost always save more than enough money
to pay you back for spending a few minutes a month examining your bill.
