First, to determine which plans are available for you, use the Custom Rate Computer and get a list of ALL the lowest cost plans available on YOUR phone line(s). The various forms of instate calling with per minute charges are an area of the phone bill that can make or break any cost cutting efforts. As explained elsewhere on this site, if you get an incredible rate for every other type of call on the 1+ provider you select as your primary carrier, you may well get shafted on the intrastate rate. Most people have far fewer instate minutes of long distance on their bills, but this is certainly not the case for everyone. The correct strategy is to select the primary carrier with the best rate for the majority of your calls. Fortunately there are calling card and/or dial around or other secondary plans that give good intrastate rates for just about everyone. If all or almost all of your calls are instate or international fax us your bill, or at least request a return call for a personal analysis using the form below to obtain the absolute lowest total bill for your exact calling pattern.

The best interstate long distance plans for your calling patterns, as detailed in our comparison tables, may not have the best rate for your intrastate calls. Everyone in the US can now get a flat 3.9¢ to 4.9¢ rate on all calls including instate using a calling card, dial-around, or block time calling plan. Other plans are available which can give you rates as low as 2.9¢ on selected calls, so you know that regardless of the interstate plan you choose, the most you'll ever pay for instate long distance will be between 2.9¢ and 4.9¢. This is the best compromise for most people. Simply sign up for 1+ service with the provider giving the best interstate rate and use dial around or calling cards for instate long distance, if the 1+ intrastate rate is higher than this.

If you know you will be calling for longer than a certain period (3-20 minutes depending on plan) on a single call, you can get decent rates (around a nickel a minute) on any call with dial around plans. It is, of course, hard to know this on most calls with everyone using answering machines or voice-mail. Even if you plan to talk for an hour to a friend or relative, you may wind up paying 99¢ to hear a 10 second answering machine message. That would work out to over $6 per minute after taxes. As plans are available that give everyone rates less than this billed by the minute with no minimum, these 10-10 plans are NEVER a good deal. Use the Custom Rate Computer to find out what we mean.
