All costs are included in these calculations (using 3% federal and 7% state/local tax rates) for 5 typical sample bills and a recent actual faxed bill for residential interstate rates. The business tables detail 3 sample bills using plans only for lines assigned to business phones. These business rates are based on bills for businesses with a maximum of 2 to 4 lines and $500 or less of monthly usage. Please give us a call for the absolute best rates (in some cases less than 2 cents) on high volume business plans. The true rate per minute and the bottom line total charge of each bill is given. Each table is ordered with the best plan listed first. The top plans for each bill are given. Please note the details of all plans are listed including the quoted rate from the provider as well as any monthly charges, minimums, PICC, USF, billing increments, and the true cost of a bill with no calls (0 minutes) for the month. As of July 1, 2000 the PICC has been eliminated from billings although some providers still charge this and just call it a PIC fee. It is usually only charged on business lines or sometimes multiple residential lines. Weekend rates (all day) are the same as the 7pm-7am rates on all plans.

A number of different bill examples are used in order to illustrate the very best plans for each type of calling pattern. Plans are listed that will provide the cheapest calling for everyone in the country. Some plans or rates are only available in limited areas and therefore other more expensive alternatives may be required in your area. Use our Custom Rate Computer to determine all the lowest cost plans available on your phone line. Many of the plans listed in each table are available for everyone in the continental US. We also provide a comparison of the "Big 3" plans in all tables.

The following additional criteria are used for the plans in the database. 1+ providers which charge an extra fee for sending an invoice are not listed. There are several calling card plans which require automatic debit forms of payment such as credit cards, debit cards, or automatic checking withdrawal. They ARE included because it seems reasonable to expect such services to require this form of payment as they can be used from ANY phone by anyone. Also companies banned from operating in some states or fined large amounts by the FCC or other government agencies due to excessive complaints about overbilling, improper charges, slamming, or cramming have been dropped from consideration. The exceptions to this are the "Big 3" providers which have been fined on numerous occasions for slamming and other offenses. Their current highly promoted plans are included in each table to give you an idea of how much extra you will actually spend by using one of these OVER advertised OVER priced plans and because they are still used by the overwhelming majority of consumers and everyone needs to know the alternatives to what he or she is now paying.

The cheapest plan in these tables may not have the lowest 1+ intrastate rates in your state. If most of your calling is in-state, then check out the Custom Rate Computer for the best rate in your state and then compare it to the best plan shown for the bill closest to your interstate calling pattern below. You can combine a secondary plan for in-state with a primary 1+ provider that has the best state-to-state rate. Some type of plan is available which will provide a maximum rate of between 3.9 to 4.9 cents per minute on all calls in-state or out.

Here are a few terms that may need explanation:

PICC & USF - FCC mandated fees which are charged by your local phone company to the 1+ long distance provider (PIC - primary interexchange carrier) and which may be padded by the 1+ provider as a form of hidden charge. The PICC has been eliminated as of July 1, 2000. See note above. It is still included in its own column but listed as ZERO ($0.00) for all plans.

Increment - This column on the tables shows the minimum period and the increment used for a single call on the bill. 1min/1min means that a 1 second call is charged as a full minute, and a 61 second call is charged as 2 minutes.

NOTE: These are the absolute best rate plans offered by the "Big 3" and as you can see they are still far more expensive than the best alternatives. Also Sprint's, ATT's, and MCI's plans have additonal conditons and restrictions and are not even available in all areas or always at these rates. You will only get the 7 cent rate on ATT if you also are using ATT for your local business phone line. Otherwise the rate is 9 cents. This data on this page is currently obsolete althouth it provides a great example of how the various plans yield totally different TRUE per minute rates.
